Psalms

Chapter 23

1

A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

2

He makes me to lie down in green pastures: he leads me beside the still waters.

3

He restores my soul: he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

4

Yes, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies: you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

6

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Study Notes

John 10:11-14

"11. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd gives his life for the sheep. 12. But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep, and flees: and the wolf catches them, and scatters the sheep. 13. The hireling flees, because he is an hireling, and cares not for the sheep. 14. I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine."

Jesus identifies himself explicitly as the Good Shepherd who knows his sheep.

Ezekiel 34:11-16

"11. For thus says the Lord GOD; Behold, I, even I, will both search my sheep, and seek them out. 12. As a shepherd seeks out his flock in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered; so will I seek out my sheep, and will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day. 13. And I will bring them out from the people, and gather them from the countries, and will bring them to their own land, and feed them on the mountains of Israel by the rivers, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14. I will feed them in a good pasture, and on the high mountains of Israel shall their fold be: there shall they lie in a good fold, and in a fat pasture shall they feed on the mountains of Israel. 15. I will feed my flock, and I will cause them to lie down, says the Lord GOD. 16. I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away, and will bind up that which was broken, and will strengthen that which was sick: but I will destroy the fat and the strong; I will feed them with judgment."

The prophet Ezekiel describes God as the Shepherd who actively seeks and cares for his flock.

Isaiah 40:11

"11. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young."

A prophetic promise of God feeding his flock like a shepherd and carrying the lambs close to his heart.

Psalm 27:1

"1. A Psalm of David. The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"

A parallel expression of God as the light and salvation that removes fear.

Psalm 77:20

"20. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron."

Reflects on the historical leadership of God as a shepherd guiding Israel through the wilderness.

Hebrews 13:20

"20. Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,"

Refers to Jesus as the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant.

Revelation 7:17

"17. For the Lamb which is in the middle of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them to living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes."

An eschatological fulfillment of the shepherd imagery where the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd.
